Living in Phuket: districts, cost of living and what daily life is really like

How much it costs to live on the island, how to choose a district and what to prepare for. Phuket through the eyes of residents, not holidaymakers.

Phuket for residents, not tourists

A holiday shows you the beach. Living somewhere shows you the commute, the supermarket and the clinic. This guide looks at Phuket the way people who live here see it, so that a decision about moving, renting or buying rests on everyday reality rather than on a good week in January.

The island already has what daily life requires: an international airport, hospitals, schools, shopping centres, sports clubs and business infrastructure. For some people Phuket becomes a place to run a business, for others a base for remote work, and for families a way to keep a familiar routine in a tropical climate.

How to choose a district

Districts differ noticeably in rhythm, building density and access to services. Distance on the map rarely tells the whole story. Busy roads can turn a short trip between districts into a much longer one, especially at peak hours.

Before choosing a property, map your daily routes: to work, school, shops, medical care and the places where you rest. In long-term living, even a small inconvenience repeated every day becomes part of your life. A home ten minutes closer to school can matter more than an extra bedroom.

What the cost of living depends on

The cost of living in Phuket is set mainly by lifestyle. Local cafes and markets help you save. International schools, private healthcare, imported groceries and regular taxi rides push the budget up.

Housing shapes the budget too: its location, size, type and closeness to popular areas. When planning a move, count not only the rent or purchase price but also the running costs that come with the home.

Work, rest and the daily rhythm

The warm climate lets you spend more time outdoors: sport, walks, beaches and evenings outside. For remote professionals, stable internet, a proper workspace and a clear line between work and rest matter just as much.

Island life does not cancel ordinary duties. Meetings, errands and trips stay on the calendar. What changes is the setting around them.

What to be ready for

Rainy season. Heavy rain can affect roads and plans for the day. When choosing a house or a condominium, check ventilation, the roof, drainage and any signs of leaks.

Traffic. Jams form on busy routes and at peak hours. Judge a location by typical travel time, not by kilometres.

High season. In the busy tourist months the island fills up, and demand for housing and some services grows. In quieter months the pace of life and the weather change.

Visas, insurance and healthcare. Immigration formalities, health insurance and the cost of private treatment need separate attention. Rules for foreigners can change, so check current requirements before you move.

Adaptation. Settling in takes time. Friends, professional contacts and a social circle usually form gradually, through work, sport, neighbours and shared interests.

Quick checklist before you move

Location Real travel time at peak hours to work, school and clinics
Budget Rent or purchase plus running costs, schooling, insurance
